Class Introduction

Are you clenching against the cold, weighed down with overcoats?
Work away winter shoulder spasms with me this JULY.

Stretch Therapy is the thinking person's yoga. It is
reducing painful restriction, increasing cat-like flexibility
• in daily life, • in your yoga practice, and • in high performance modes.

This class will focus on tension and easing postural tension pain* by mobilising tightness around shoulders, from neck and jaw, to thoracic spine. Great to fight winter tension, or too much screen work and especially useful for singers and anyone needing to maximise relaxed breathing and oral articulation.

Your teacher: Indija Mahjoeddin
After decades of body training and dance analysis, a background in dance, martial arts, movement notation, and deep dabbling in Pilates, Feldenkreis and yoga, I was motivated to teach this Australian stretch system** over others because I find it to be in harmony with my tacit knowledge of body mechanics and a fast track to achieve maximum effects from your bodywork.
Stretching is a precursor to body balance (allowing postural alignment) and comfort (freedom from painful restriction) not just a means to achieve spectacular 'range of movement' benchmarks. My classes will incorporate body awareness, lateral energy connection, fascial softening, mobility warmups, and a stillness meditation, in addition to pain-alleviating stretch techniques that also strengthen and protect. All ages and levels will benefit.

* NB: I am not qualified to diagnose or treat pain from recent or chronic injury.
** Stretch Therapy is the registered trademark of the system developed by Kit Laughlin and Olivia Allnut in Canberra, ACT, Australia.

Short Introduction and Accomplishments

I have tertiary training in dance and movement (western & eastern), advanced Indonesian language, and gained my teaching qualification for Stretch Therapy in 2016.  In addition I hold a Masters (MCA) in intercultural theatre and pursued Lighting Design and a Commercial Art certificate at TAFE. My career has been dominated by making theatre events featuring indonesian martial arts, dance, oral epic storytelling and music, often with a LOTE bahasa and cultural diversity focus for schools). Ive consistently taught dance (including flamenco and other world dance styles), dabbled in cabaret/vaudeville and specialised in movement integrity and body awareness. I endorse Stretch Therapy because of its biomechanical & philosophical underpinnings.

My teaching philosophy: Hands on, deeply informed, balancing a self discovery approach with as much theory as the client needs, and using cross disciplinary learning modes. I am passionately committed to finding pathways to transcend limitations of habit whether in language, bodywork, performance or sustainable life skills.

When not teaching I'm making porcelain art works or dancing on tables to any Balkan cocek.
