About the Class
|Class Type||Private Tutoring|
|Age Group||Tertiary, Adult|
|Study Level||Intermediate, Advanced|
My weekly sessions concentrate on helping intermediate and advanced adult non-native speakers of English to improve their pronunciation within a strong grammatical framework. Because I design the lessons individually to cater to each student's goals, language level and learning style, students must commit to a minimum package of four classes (usually taken over a four week period, but this is flexible) after they have attended a free half-hour trial lesson. I can also arrange to meet at varying times and days to suit the student's work, study and family obligations.
Short Introduction and Accomplishments
Over the past 10 years, I have taught English to university students and adult learners in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, helping them to gain greater fluency, improve their pronunciation, edit their writing and feel more confident communicating with native English speakers. Previously I have also worked as a university lecturer, journal editor and librarian. I do not teach by a set book or method. Instead, I work closely with each student to determine their goals and needs, and jointly plan a learning path with them. I use a range of techniques and strategies, depending on each student's language level, learning style and the skills they most want to develop. However, my strengths are in helping students to improve their English pronunciation within a grammatical framework and to successfully edit their own work.
In addition to teaching students privately, I have run pronunciation classes and workshops for English teachers and students in universities in Laos and Vietnam, as well as classes for visually impaired students. My qualifications include a BA from the University of Oregon, MS from the University of California Los Angeles and PhD from the University of California Berkeley. I was born and raised in the United States, but have now lived half my life in Australia, so my accent is an easy-to-understand Australian/American mix. I enjoy teaching and take pride in ensuring my students steadily improve their language skills. I have learned to speak and write basic Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and Spanish, so I understand the problems speakers of these languages have when trying to improve their English.
